The historical background of Newcastle marks it as one of the most important cities in the UK. Once a Roman garrison town it was the site of a fortress and to this day has parts of Hadrian's Wall still evident through the city centre. Starting from Wallsend, Hadrian's Wall sweeps across the landscape to the west coast.

Many Roman forts and settlements have been unearthed such as Vindolanda and Housesteads. Visit the Roman Army Museum and get the feel of what Roman life was like on the furthest reaches of the Roman Empire, or if you’re feeling fit, you can always walk along the wall its self.

Alnwick Castle is known to many from the Harry Potter films, and it has featured in many movies and TV programs such as Blackadder.

Visit this elegant market town and play a round or two of golf on its stunning course, or visit Hardy's of Alnwick, the world-renowned fishing tackle makers, and favourites of the Prince of Wales. They have a great museum and shop.

The River Tweed is one of the finest trout and salmon fishing rivers in Scotland or England, and runs along the border of the two countries to the sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Edinburgh is a cultural city and well worth a day out to discover its castle, museums and the Queens residence at Holyrood. There are plenty of shops including Harvey Nichols and exquisite boutiques.

Kielder Reservoir and Forest offer the ideal opportunity to see local birds and wildlife, cycle, walk and even see the stars at the new Observatory.

Golf is always a firm favourite, and guests will not be disappointed by the range of fine courses at your disposal across the region. From courses literally on the seashore at Bamburgh to inland courses, the choice is phenomenal.
